The Johor Immigration Department apprehended 18 foreign nationals engaging in begging activities at night markets in Johor Bahru on Monday, February 3rd. The raids were executed at the Kampung Melayu Majidee and Taman Abad night markets following numerous public complaints.
Johor Immigration Department director Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus disclosed in a statement on February 5th that the detained individuals ranged in age from 40 to 69 years old and comprised of various nationalities: four Chinese men, four Thai men, three Cambodian men, one Cambodian woman, two Syrian men, two Syrian women, a Bangladeshi man, and a Pakistani man. Preliminary investigations indicate that each beggar could amass up to RM600 in donations daily.Mohd Rusdi further stated that some of the beggars exploited their physical disabilities to elicit greater sympathy and financial assistance from the public. The detainees are currently under investigation under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Immigration Regulations 1963. They have been transferred to the Setia Tropika Immigration Depot pending further action. This operation follows previous instances where authorities uncovered beggars earning significantly more than average office employees monthly. The Social Welfare Department (JKM) discovered one beggar who possessed a Proton X70 and received a monthly aid of RM450, highlighting the discrepancies and potential exploitation within the begging system.
