Ting Ting Chen first visited Newfoundland in 2017; she took some photos and filed them under “Impressions of Newfoundland.”
They are also the result of an unusual and prolific partnership with a Newfoundlander named Robert Tilley. He appears in many landscapes, adding geographic perspective and a human element, as well as being the model — colleague might be a better term — for most of the portraits. Thus there is some jostle and overlap between the two genres.
By composition, palette, and texture they are quite “painterly.” There are often traditional, even archetypal, decisions made in their framing, configuration, and colour range. Each is titled, and accompanied by a short artist’s description. This visual alchemy is not limited to skies. In “Resting Under an Old Spruce” , the tree’s bare limbs appear to hold a meringue of cloud. The water in “The World of Ice” is hefted into huge bayonets and globules, while the spray in “Throwing a Stone” pirouettes like an aquatic ballet dancer. These are often foregrounded or backgrounded by a N.L. vernacular of dories, sheds, and fences. Chen and Tilley love to visit even the smallest communities.
The progression of the book, from am immediate otherworldly loveliness through more complex portfolios, brings page after page of unexpected, rewarding pieces
