Flights delays and cancellations are testing the patience of Australian air travellers, as calls grow to reform consumer protections in the aviation industry.
More than a quarter of Australian airline flights are late, as the federal government faces growing pressure to boost consumer protections for air travellers.
Federal independent MP Monique Ryan said air travellers should be compensated for delayed or cancelled flights where the airlines are responsible for those issues.Data from the Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics shows a deterioration in the punctuality of flights operated by Australian airlines in January 2024 compared with the same month in 2023.
“Airlines would be less likely to cancel or delay flights if they have to pay compensation fees for doing so,” Ryan said. “Behaviours like slot hoarding would likely disappear.” Blacket, who needed to be in Sydney the following morning for work, said the airline offered different reasons for cancelling the flight, eventually blaming the weather and refusing to offer any compensation.Blacket and her friends ended up hiring a car to drive more than 700 kilometres back to Sydney after staying the night in Taree.
He also said Jetstar provided “considerable support when delays or cancellations are within our control”, including accommodation, meals and transport. “Even if we had more competition, this might improve airfares, but it might not improve airline practices when it comes to issues like customer service, refund rights and complaints,” he said.
