Jesse Plemons's Oscar nomination may have been one of the bigger surprises among ThePowerOfTheDog's haul—but it hardly came out of nowhere.
. The Dallas native has been everywhere Academy voters have looked. It was only a matter of time before they gave him their stamp of approval.is largely informed by the warm, intimate, pained dynamic between George and Rose. Plemons and Dunst had previously worked together on, portraying another young couple, and speak proudly of their performances in the show .
For his part, Plemons focused on George’s complexities beyond the page, immediately making that intention known to Campion. “In our first conversation, I mentioned that I wasn’t interested in playing someone where it was just the guy that gets stepped on, and stepped on, and stepped on,” he says. “And she referenced—this quiet power and grace. He’s right in the center of all of the drama, but he’s never a part of it. That really immediately snapped something into focus for me.
Campion tells me Plemons fit the role like a glove. “It’s a great part for Jesse because he often plays badasses and characters that don’t have his natural sweetness,” she says. “It was a great pleasure, a kind of astonishment to work with him, because he’s a bit more embodied in his character than anybody I’ve ever seen. It makes such an impression over time on you. You just trust. He never puts a foot wrong in that way. He’s always real.
During rehearsal, the director gave all of her actors unique exercises to fully burrow into their roles. Plemons recalls one where he and Cumberbatch played out a scenario that wasn’t intended for their film, in which they embodied adolescent versions of their characters. It’s set on the night before Phil leaves George for college, a sort of melancholy two-hander.
The actors’ rapport became so enmeshed with the Burbank boys’ dynamic, in fact, that things got genuinely tense. At one point, Cumberbatch, who stayed in character through the shoot, surprised his costar in a small moment by quipping, “How’re you doing, big boy?” . The comment stung Plemons. “When people call me big boy, I’m just like,,” he says with a grimace, saying his weight has fluctuated over the years. “But all of that stuff goes into the pot and only benefits the film and the dynamics.
