As the armed conflict in Israel and Palestine continues after the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel, Greater Clevelanders with ties to the area are continuing to feel the fallout.

That’s especially true for those in Northeast Ohio who have been affected personally, who must watch helplessly as their loved ones in Israel suffer, he said. “Hamas has demonstrated historically and certainly over the past two weeks that that is not of interest,” Blain said. “For people who say Israel should make a deal or negotiate -- with whom?”
“The hostages need to be released. Some are babies; we’ve seen pictures of them in cages. Some elderly – even Holocaust survivors – are being held hostage in Gaza,” Rudin-Luria said. “The world should be demanding that these hostages are released and brought home.” Resnik condemned violence against civilians from either side and called reports of retaliation against Palestinians abhorrent.
Odeh is one of them. Her parents live an hour-and-a-half from Gaza, where an Israeli settlement is right behind their house. While they have food – unlike those in“I talked to my dad a day before yesterday, and he’s not a man who talks a whole lot… and he just sounded so devastated, defeated just watching the news,” Odeh said.
Many Americans of Palestinian descent have expressed frustration with American government officials’ stance on Israel, which they say lacks nuance and fails to consider the perspective of Palestinians.
