Hezbollah has launched a blizzard of missiles as Israel’s ground advance was backed up with more aerial bombardment, including a blast near a UN School.

| Lebanon-based militant force Hezbollah has launched a blizzard of missile, drone and mortar attacks on northern Israel, before an expected speech on Friday by the Iran-backed group’s leader that could set the stage for a broader military campaign.

Israel’s ground advance was backed up with yet more aerial bombardment, including a blast near a United Nations School in the Jabaliya refugee camp that killed more than 20, and a strike on a residential building in the Bureij camp that killed at least 15.Hamas claimed the total death toll among Gaza’s 2.3 million population had now passed 9000 since the Israeli campaign began three weeks ago, in response to the Hamas terrorist attack of October 7.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken, was expected back in the region on Friday, as Israel’s Arab neighbours start to harden against it.Bahrain’s parliament announced on Thursday that the country would sever all economic ties with Israel, after being one of the first countries to normalise relations with the Jewish state following the Abraham Accords of 2020.

“The United States is committed to make sure everything possible is done to protect civilians,” he said before leaving for the Middle East. He also said the Biden Administration was determined to prevent the war spreading to Lebanon or elsewhere. But now Gaza-based Hamas is also attacking Israel from Lebanon, claiming to have fired 12 rockets towards the northern Israeli town of Kiryat Shmona on Thursday.

Israel Defence Forces chief Lt Gen Herzi Halevi appeared to warn off Hezbollah, saying “less than half the Israeli air force” was involved in strikes on Gaza, leaving “most of its force ready, with bombs loaded, should the need arise to attack on other fronts”. “We will see when that day comes and fuel will be delivered with supervision to the hospitals,” he said. “We will do everything so that it does not reach the Hamas infrastructure.”
