A trio of GOP politicians called Iowa the 'ideal' one to kick off presidential election seasons

Republican leaders from Iowa are jumping to defend their state's first-in-the-nation nominating status after Monday night's bungled caucuses sparked cries for Iowa to lose its privileged status.

Iowa Sens. Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst, joined by Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, called their home state the "ideal" one to kick off presidential election seasons, pointing to what they said is its “large population of independent voters and its practice of careful deliberation.”“Iowa’s bipartisan first-in-the-nation status helped lead to the nomination of President Obama and has the full backing of President Trump.

Even before Monday's caucuses were marred by technical snafus and confusion that delayed the release of official results, Iowa's longstanding position as the nation's first presidential nominating contest has been the subject of growing criticism. Democrats in particular have taken aim, arguing the predominantly white state is not representative of the national electorate. Even some Democratic candidates eager to court Iowans over the past year have suggested that the state be forced to relinquish its pride of place in the primary process.Sign UpBy signing up you agree to receive email newsletters or alerts from POLITICO.
