The High Court in Kuala Lumpur ruled that a man accused of being Datuk Paiman Shakimon, sentenced to 13 years in prison for cheating and falsifying documents, is actually an Indonesian national named Aldrin Pratama Widjaja.

The High Court in Kuala Lumpur ruled today that a man accused of being Datuk Paiman Shakimon, who was previously sentenced to 13 years in prison for cheating and falsifying documents, is not the businessman but an Indonesian national named Aldrin Pratama Widjaja. Judge Datuk Muhammad Jamil Hussin stated that the prosecution failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Aldrin Pratama Widjaja, 65, is indeed Paiman.

Muhammad Jamil highlighted the authenticity of Widjaja's passport, which was confirmed by the Indonesian Embassy. He pointed out that Widjaja's personal documents, including his Indonesian identity card, driving license, and firearm permit, all bear his name. The judge also noted a close match between the thumbprint specimen provided by the National Registration Department (NRD) and Paiman Bin Shakimon's name. However, he questioned the ambiguity of a 'close match' in the search process, suggesting it leaves room for doubt. Muhammad Jamil further emphasized discrepancies in the NRD's verification report on Widjaja's identity card. The card lists his birth date as June 1, 1960, while Paiman's is recorded as March 23, 1959. The judge challenged the prosecution for not addressing this discrepancy, questioning how they can claim that Widjaja and Paiman are the same person if they have different birth dates. The inquiry proceedings, which lasted six days starting September 18 last year, saw the prosecution call 13 witnesses. Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Ashrof Adrin Kamarul represented the prosecution, while lawyers Datuk Mohamad Hanafiah Zakaria and Datuk Hisyam Teh Poh Teik represented Aldrin Pratama. In 2011, Paiman was sentenced to 26 years in prison by the Sessions Court for cheating and forging documents in an investment fraud case involving RM12 million belonging to two Datuks between 2005 and 2006. However, on July 20, 2012, Paiman escaped during his leave for appeal hearing, prompting the High Court to issue an arrest warrant and a warrant of imprisonment against him. In 2021, Paiman was apprehended by the police after entering Malaysia using an Indonesian passport under the name of Aldrin Pratama Widjaja. A biometric fingerprint check at the NRD confirmed his identity as Paiman Bin Shakimon. The High Court subsequently upheld the Sessions Court's verdict on December 2, 2021, ordering Paiman to serve a 13-year prison sentence for cheating and falsifying documents. In 2023, Paiman filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal against the arrest and imprisonment warrants issued against him, leading to the Court of Appeal's order for the High Court to conduct an inquiry to establish his identity
