In addition to operating a number of artisanal mines, the Russian group Wagner intends to kick things up a notch in Mali. It has set its sights on Loulo-Gounkoto, the country’s most productive mine, currently run by Canada’s Barrick Gold.

As usual, the images quickly made the rounds on social media. On 10 February, a Telegram channel close to Wagner relayed a photo of two masked white mercenaries walking through the Intahaka mine, the largest artisanal gold-panning site in northern Mali, some 40km from Gao.
