An unexpected alliance is growing between imams in Sahel’s Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali, and the coup leaders. Anti-Western rhetoric is common, as the religious movements ride on the juntas’ popularity and their declarations about restoring sovereignty.
Mali’s Imam Mahmoud Dicko makes a rare public appearance in Bamako on 28 November 2021, warning that ‘things are not going well’ in the Sahel state. Last year, the influential imam spearheaded mass anti-government protests.
Slogans such as “revolutionary march” and “fight against imperialism” reverberated incongruously around the soaring ceramic arches of Niamey’s largest mosque, as the television cameras rolled.
