In celebration of the spirituality of baseball | Opinion
There is a certain kind of spirituality that is unique to baseball. Perhaps it’s not the same religion espoused by the immortal Annie Savoy in, where she sagely observed that it is no coincidence that there are 108 beads in the Catholic rosary and 108 stitches in a baseball and declared that “the only church that truly feeds the soul is the Church of Baseball” — but she’s not that far off base.
I once took a preternaturally aware young man to the small Waco airport. Because of scheduling issues, his parents had had to leave earlier. The family had moved to Waco from New York City when the kid’s parents joined the Baylor faculty. Making conversation while we waited, I asked him if missed anything about New York. “Yes sir,” he replied. “I miss walking into Yankee Stadium and suddenly seeing the field with its vast panoply of green spreading out before me.” Or words to that effect.
I have dragged my wife, Mary, to numerous baseball games in our marriage and she has always good-naturedly indulged me, bless her. I won a coveted Joe Morgan bobblehead while visiting Durham, N.C., for a game with the Durham Bulls. Alas, no batter hit the iconic “Snorting Bull” billboard high above left field with the tagline, “Hit sign win steak.”
