Not many of us think about what will adorn our bodies once we die. Helen Bodycomb has gone a step further – creating a stunning death shroud.

Helen Bodycomb wraps herself in a sheet of raw bamboo. She’s working out her body measurements for a critical work: her death shroud.

Except for the gold – riffing on the idea of a treasure and the goldfields site – the shroud is biodegradable. It’s whimsical but also sincere, she says.“I’m the final ingredient, that’s part of the punchline in a way.” JIM, made by Bodycomb and Rene Schaefer about 15 years ago, depicts drummer Jim White, known for The Dirty Three, Xylouris White and more.“There are remaining phenomenal middens many metres deep, demonstrating many thousands of years of camps,” she says, adding that the work is designed to honour that enduring presence.

She’s keen to help share Indigenous stories. “It’s rare that I make using someone else’s designs but this is a really important time. The Voice is imminent and this is a time of heightened consciousness about reconciliation.”Italy is the epicentre for ancient as well as contemporary mosaics and Bodycomb regularly leads tours to its historical sites.

Made during one of Victoria’s lockdowns, Pandemic Relic is a bronze that will outlive all surviving memories of the experience of COVID, says Bodycomb.

NSW ‘not alone’ in massive increase in deaths on roadsNSW ‘not alone’ in massive increase in deaths on roadsNRMA Spokesperson Peter Khoury says New South Wales is “not alone” in the massive increase in deaths on roads. Nationally deaths on roads have had a major increase, going up by seven per cent to 721 from the beginning of January to the end of July. “We have seen a considerable jump in 2023, 250 deaths in New South Wales alone. “The 12-month rolling period is well over 1,200 deaths, so not good news anywhere. “Particularly bad in New South Wales where we are working so hard to see the road toll reduced.”
