The tennis great has revealed how the Pro-Russia drama surrounding his father Srdjan Djokovic's absence contributed to an emotional outburst following his 22nd grand slam win.
The Serbian tennis great was overcome with emotion as he defeated Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in a straight set thriller and claimed his 10th Australian Open.
Djokovic revealed that the pair had made the heartbreaking decision for his father to stay home due to the relentless media coverage. "We both agreed it would probably be better that he is not there,” Djokovic told reporters on Sunday night. The lack of his father’s presence undoubtedly contributed to the heightened emotions but Djokovic said he saw his father afterwards to celebrate and the pair shared a hug.
