After the win he climbed into his players’ box and was left sobbing uncontrollably, the tears continuing to flow after he returned to his bench. Djokovic led it 5-0 and while his rival stormed back into it, the Serb did enough to seal yet another history-making triumph. Only a wild backhand error where he appeared to frame the ball kept Djokovic from holding cleanly to open the match, but the game still took almost four minutes because fans continued to interrupt his service motion.
“This whole opening set has basically been a statement of, ‘This is my house’, from Novak,” Jim Courier said on Nine. At 3-3 Djokovic took a tumble trying to reach a ball, rolling with his momentum to try and limit any injuries, though he was spotted shaking out his right wrist and hand afterwards. In it, nerves clearly struck with four bad errors shared across the two men before the first changeover. Tsitsipas made three off his forehand alone while Djokovic produced one from his backhand and then double-faulted to hand back two mini-breaks.
