Federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen is to declare the Hunter region of NSW as Australia’s next proposed offshore wind region.
The Hunter will next month be unveiled as Australia’s next region open to offshore wind, as Labor moves to accelerate the development of a sector it hopes can aid the country’s transition away from fossil fuels.
In a bid to capitalise on momentum, Mr Bowen plans to announce a public consultation period to open the Hunter to offshore wind, sources familiar with the plan toldThe announcement will come just weeks ahead of an expected report by global consulting company Arup to produce a report into the state’s offshore wind capacity, as New South Wales explores its own offshore wind target.
Around Victoria’s coastline, the winds are very strong and consistent by international standards, while a large area of shallow ocean less than 50 metres to 60 metres deep is suitable for wind turbine platforms to be fixed to the seabed, a much more mature and lower cost technology than floating turbines that have to be used in deeper waters.
