Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong has advised employers to empathise and negotiate with employees who have been affected by natural disasters such as floods. He highlighted that employers are restricted from arbitrarily reducing wages due to the Employment Act 1955 in Peninsular Malaysia and the Labour Ordinance for Sabah and Sarawak.
Sim further encouraged both employers and employees to seek assistance from the Labour Department in case of uncertainty regarding work arrangements during such events. The Minister also noted the government’s understanding of the uncontrollable nature of disasters, emphasizing the need for compromise to maintain harmony amongst stakeholders
