This music program for kids as young as six is proven to boost literacy, numeracy and attitude to schooling - and it may be coming to a public school near you.

"It's good to be in this kind of ensemble because it's helped me, especially at times when I've been stressed," she says.Fellow year 6 student and budding violinist Lachlan Martin agrees: "It kind of changes how you see things. You do a bunch of things differently." Like Cecilia, Lachlan started learning strings in year 1 and, since then, his love of music has blossomed. He has also noticed his reading and writing improve, and says he uses music to help with language and memory tasks.

From years 1-3, they practise their instruments in class for half-an-hour daily, led by their classroom teacher with support from ACO-trained specialists and training videos. She explains: "Throughout our lives, every seven years, our brain is renewing itself [through] something called 'neural pruning'. Basically, it chucks out everything it doesn't need and makes space for new learning on top of that.
