Rising wait times and overcrowding in public hospitals are causing significant distress for patients in Malaysia. Individuals struggling with health conditions like Thiran, who faces a 3-year wait for knee replacement surgery, highlight the urgency for solutions. Healthcare experts suggest leveraging private clinics to alleviate the burden on public facilities by handling non-urgent procedures and preventive care.

“My knees are worn out. I struggle to walk every day and I need to put up with this for the next three years. The waiting list is long and I was told that I might get an earlier slot if another patient pulls out. Ahmad, a retired police officer, was recently diagnosed with cancer and is getting treatment at a government hospital.

“She went there in the morning . It was only at about 7pm that she was finally given a bed,” he claimed. She said scaling up initiatives such as the Peka B40 and Madani medical scheme may reduce wait times to be admitted to wards and lessen the burden on public health clinics. Another public healthcare expert, Datuk Dr Zainal Ariffin Omar, agrees that outsourcing healthcare to the private sector appears to be the only solution until the government overcomes shortcomings at public hospitals.
