This is the first time Germany has acknowledged granting refugee status for democracy campaigners form Hong Kong.

Ray Wong and Alan Li, who took part in 2016 protests dubbed the ‘Fishball Revolution’, were due to stand trial on riot charges but fled Hong Kong in November 2017.

The German consulate in Hong Kong said it was aware that the two Hong Kong residents were staying in Germany, although it could not provide details on individual cases. “Our success in gaining political refugee status reflects the situation in Hong Kong is worsening in the eyes of the international community. Hong Kong has changed completely from the past,” Li said.In April, a city court jailed four leaders of a 2014 “Occupy” pro-democracy civil disobedience movement, while young activist Joshua Wong was jailed for two months this month.

Wong said freedoms in Hong Kong had been destroyed by Beijing and the Hong Kong government since the city was handed back from British rule under a “one country, two systems” deal meant to ensure freedoms not allowed in mainland China including an independent judiciary.
