Police and 13 CFA vehicles and crews were called to the fire on Graham Road at 11:55pm, and could not control the blaze until 2am on Tuesday. The scene was declared safe at 3am, by which time crews had extinguished 90 per cent of the fire. Arson squad detectives attended the scene on Tuesday to investigate the blaze, while firefighters worked with machinery to guarantee no hotspots remained.Police are appealing for information from the public, particularly those who may have been driving along Graham Road between 11:30pm and 11:45pm on Monday. The hotel was established in 1876, according to a 2014 Campaspe Shire Council heritage review that found the site had local significance.
Its first owner, Irishman John Meehan, applied for a publican's licence and the hotel operated as a boarding house and relay station for coaches. A church was built beside the hotel two years later, and the historic review said it became "a popular meeting place for the district's Irish residents".
