As Ukraine fires off shells more quickly than it can replace them, the EU and US rustle up $3.5 billion to feed the Kyiv machine and crank up European output.
| The US and European Union have stepped up their supplies of ammunition to Ukraine, as President Volodymyr Zelensky prepares for an anticipated “spring offensive” to repel Russian forces.
The Ukrainians are firing an estimated 4000 to 7000 shells a day, and are getting through their stocks faster than the West can replenish them. Meanwhile, the Russians are hammering Ukraine with 20,000 or more shells a day.The EU has yet managed to deliver only about 350,000 155mm artillery shells, despite promises of far more - and even as Ukrainian Defence Minister Okesiy Reznikoz says at least 100,000 shells a month are required from Europe.
The plan also envisages a strategic effort to ramp the European arms industry’s output capacity in the medium term. The new program involves Norway and 17 EU members, including France and Germany. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said the initiative was “new territory” for the bloc.
