PETALING JAYA: The Kuala Lumpur High Court has fixed May 21 to hear arguments from all the interveners of a suit challenging the validity of vernacular schools in Malaysia.
A total of 14 groups have applied as interveners following a suit filed by Gabungan Pelajar Melayu Semenanjung and Majlis Pembangunan Pendidikan Islam Malaysia .
Justice Datuk Indera Mohd Sofiam Abd Razak allowed the 14 interveners to present their arguments in May. GPMS and Mappim were seeking a court declaration that it undermined provisions in Article 152 of the Federal Constitution to use languages other than the national language as medium of instructions in government funded schools.
The court was also told that Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia and Ikatan Guru-Guru Muslim Malaysia had also filed suits pertaining to the same matter, and that application would be filed to combine the cases. GPMS and MAPPIM advocate Amelda Fuad Abi & Aidil said it was to ensure the same case was not heard separately.
