Some recent incidents have put the former Countdown host, and the people caring for him, in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

One of Molly Meldrum’s carers and closest friends has defended his inner circle from attacks in the tabloid and social media over claims he is being neglected, saying the 80-year-old pop culture legend is “loved and supported”.

Outrage and ridicule followed – the incident has been described variously as alarming, concerning and embarrassing – with many questioning the care Meldrum is receiving, and the wisdom of “allowing” him out in public.Meldrum with Olivia Newton-John. He recently attended her memorial service without incident.

“Molly is the first person to say he’s not perfect. But it’s his lack of perfection that makes him one of the country’s most popular and relatable figures – and one of the favourite people in my life.” It is impossible to know to what extent these actions can be explained by the fact Meldrum lives with an acquired brain injury, the result of a fall from the roof of a pool house at his home in 2011 that left him in an induced coma for weeks.
