Health care workers in Hawaii say a lack of government action is worsening an already crippling surge of coronavirus cases in the islands, and without effective policy changes the state’s limited hospitals could face a grim crisis.
Dworkin said that while mandates may be unpopular, rationing Hawaii's limited health care resources is “going to be far more ugly.”
Some believe a more robust screening process for travelers, including two tests, one before travel and another after arrival, could also help slow the spread of COVID-19. A vaccine pass for restaurants, bars and other businesses was announced for Oahu, but that program won’t begin for several weeks, and gains from incentivizingThe governor recently suggested that people stop traveling to Hawaii until the end of October, but he didn’t change any official travel rules.
The governor also quietly signed an order this week that releases health care workers and hospitals from liability during the surge. “Are we undercounting travelers that are arriving or that subsequently become sick? Yeah, probably we are,” Char said. “If they’re not testing, then it makes it really difficult to identify those people.”
