Premier Chris Minns said NSW would take back the power to deregister overheight trucks that block tunnels unless the national regulator gets tougher.

A third overheight truck in two days delayed motorists heading into the Sydney Harbour Tunnel on Wednesday after Premier Chris Minns vowed to crack down on drivers and operators causing “intolerable” disruption to commuters.

Minns said the government was also looking at moving the warning systems further back from the Harbour Tunnel, so that truck drivers were notified earlier if they were above the height limit. Signs could also flash up the truck’s registration rather than a generic warning. “Clearly the system isn’t working,” Minns said. “Something has to change and if necessary we’ll take that responsibility back into state hands and enforce it ourselves. The situation as it currently stands is intolerable.”

The government said such a ban would divert too many heavy trucks to the bridge, and they would clog up the city.
