Premier Chris Minns said NSW would take back the power to deregister over-height trucks that block Sydney’s tunnels unless the national regulator gets tougher.

Premier Chris Minns says he will reclaim the power to deregister over-height trucks that block Sydney’s tunnels unless the national regulator gets tougher, after 56 incidents in the city’s tunnels this year, including two in the Harbour Tunnel on Tuesday.

Minns said the situation was “intolerable” and the government was also looking at moving the warning systems further from the tunnel, so that truck drivers were notified earlier if they were in breach of the height limit. Signs could also flash up the truck’s registration rather than a generic warning.

Roads Minister John Graham is due to speak with National Heavy Vehicle Regulator chairman Duncan Gay, himself a former roads minister, on Wednesday. Minns warned that if the regulator did not enforce the available penalties by deregistering offending trucks for three to six months, the NSW government would take back those powers.

Minns flagged a police blitz in coming weeks. He said the data indicated newer and inexperienced operators, and owner drivers, were the main problem rather than the big logistics companies. The government rebuffed calls to ban trucks from the tunnel altogether. Executive director of lobby group Business Sydney Paul Nicolaou said on Tuesday that Minns had “no choice” but to ban large trucks immediately until the freeway’s warning and diversion infrastructure was improved.
