Vietnam would welcome a strong statement from Anthony Albanese on preserving peace in the South China Sea, its ambassador to Australia says, amid a flare-up in tensions between Hanoi and Beijing over recent Chinese incursions into its exclusive economic zone.

Before travelling to Vietnam, Mr Albanese will deliver the keynote address in Singapore on Friday at the International Institute for Strategic Studies’ Shangri-La Dialogue, Asia’s major defence summit.
