Two people, including a member of a village peacekeeping team, were killed in a shooting attack at a checkpoint in Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao Sur , on Monday, January 27. The attack occurred at a Barangay Labu-Labu checkpoint along the national highway when two gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire with an automatic rifle.
Colonel Bobby Paloma, Maguindanao police provincial director, identified the victims as Hassen Kumamo, 17, a member of the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team (BPAT), and Esmael Singh, 20, both residents of Barangay Labu Labu Mother. Three others were injured by stray bullets: Ali Amerudin, 17; Anwar Banalan, 20; and Mohamad Husain, 30. All victims were manning the BPAT checkpoint at the time of the attack. A manhunt has been launched against the suspects. This marks the second attack against BPAT members in Shariff Aguak in less than a week. On January 22, a BPAT member was killed and another was injured in a separate gun attack at the town's public market. Police have identified several persons of interest in both incidents and are continuing to investigate the possible motives. A week prior to the checkpoint attack, gunmen on a motorbike shot and killed the driver of an ice cream delivery van after taking his sling bag, which contained his daily earnings.
