A grass cutter in Kelantan, Malaysia, has found an unusual way to support his family by catching and selling rice locusts.
Muhammad Rozali Zulkifli, 37, a grass cutter from Kampung Rambai, Tok Chedol in Kelantan, has found an unusual way to support his family: selling rice locusts. He began catching and selling the insects nearly a decade ago, initially as a small side income. Now, his nightly hunts for the locusts in nearby paddy fields yield about one kilogramme each night, which he sells to customers in various states.
Rozali explained that he uses a net to catch the locusts that gather on the grass and in the paddy fields, typically leaving his house from 8pm to midnight daily. The rainy season is especially good for his efforts. He soaks the locusts and lightly fries them until they turn reddish before selling them. Rozali and his wife, Nor Wan Zianal Atikah Aziz, 27, utilize Facebook to promote their products, boosting their sales. He earns between RM500 and RM700 a month from selling the rice locusts at RM10 per 100 grams, helping to supplement his family's daily expenses
