The government has announced the Solar for Rakyat Incentive Scheme , which is a scheme to encourage Malaysians to install solar photovoltaic systems. Rebates for installations will be given and it is expected that this will increase the adoption of solar generation among the public.
Deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof said that SolaRIS will offer a rebate of RM1,000/kWac up to a maximum of RM4,000. The scheme is open to first-time Net Energy Metering programme applicants who are Malaysian citizens, with a one-time claim limit for each TNB account holder. Applications must be submitted to the Sustainable Energy Development Authority from 1 April to 31 December 2024 and the rebate will be on a first come, first served basis.
Fadillah, who is also the minister of energy transition and water transformation, said that government efforts are underway to increase renewable energy capacity to 70% by 2050 and to reduce carbon emissions from the electricity supply sector. On a related note, the fire department announced last week that it will soon publish a guideline for solar panel installations on commercial buildings and houses, which will include specifications for the size, grouping, and distance of the panels.
One company that has recently gotten into the solar game is TIME, which introduced its Emit Solar service last month. It offers custom solar installations for landed houses with no upfront payments and a payment plan that can be stretched up to 10 years.
