The San Francisco Giants signed All-Star lefty Carlos Rodón to a two-year, $44 million deal in what should hopefully be the first major domino to fall in MLB free agency. The deal, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN, includes an opt-out after the first season. Rodón made the first All-Star Game of his career last season for the Chicago White Sox after, unsurprisingly, having the best season of his career in 2021. The then-28-year-old went 13-5 with an ERA of 2.37, a WHIP of 0.957 and 185 strikeouts over 132.2 innings pitched. The performance was good enough to not only earn an invite to the Midsummer Classic, but also got him fifth in AL Cy Young voting. Oh, and he also threw a no-hitter.
The lefty was a target for numerous big market teams, and for good reason, but there’s always a catch with these types of deals. One example is the fact that after July 18 of last year, he never pitched more than five innings in a game as he dealt with arm soreness late in the season. He also had a shoddy performance against the Astros in Game 1 of the ALDS, which came after 12 days of rest, where he lasted just 2.2 innings.
At the same time, this was the second best player by WAR last year on the White Sox, one of the best teams in the American League, who is headed to a team known for their reclamation projects in players that haven’t quite lived up to their hype. The Giants got Kevin Gausman to get some Cy Young buzz early last season, along with his first career All-Star nod, so perhaps they could build on the fact that Rodón also did that last season at a younger age.
