Assessing the potential landing spots for Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa in MLB free agency.
The MLB lockout has ended, and Carlos Correa is the top free agent remaining. Where the race for the star shortstop stands as spring training is set to begin.Rejecting the Astros’ one-year, $18.4 million qualifying offer freed Carlos Correa from the only franchise he’s ever known. The decision is procedural and does not prevent the Astros from pursuing a reunion with their superstar shortstop, but nothing in their history suggests it will happen.
Houston had exclusive negotiating rights with Correa for five days following the World Series. It produced a five-year, $160 million offer that isn’t close to meeting Correa’s demands for a “big, long contract.” Think eight or 10 years instead of five or six. Teams more willing to meet Correa’s desire are now recruiting him although the Rangers and Tigers appear to have filled their needs. Here are some of the most logical landing spots for Correa:Gleyber Torres’ stock has fallen since 2019. The Yankees moved him off shortstop midway through the 2021 season, one in which the team received negative-15 defensive runs saved from the position.
With Corey Seager now with the Rangers, Correa could come into play. Trea Turner is still around and is an elite shortstop, but perhaps Los Angeles could move him to second base. Turner played there with Seager at shortstop last season. The Dodgers are the closest thing baseball has to a superteam, so never rule anything out. They traded for Mookie Betts in 2020 when they didn’t really need him. Ditto for signing Trevor Bauer last winter.
