The Last Word: Former Meath football manager Seán Boylan is a happy-go-lucky guy who adores his wife Tina and their six children. Here, he reflects on his sporting life and his biggest influence
My mother and father were my mentors growing up. My father had been a general in the army, but I never heard him give an order or an instruction at home. There was a calmness about him. I was one of six kids at home and he’d always say “Ask your mother” if we were looking for anything. He never complained.I was in agricultural college for a year, but I left after that. I rang home one night — we got a phone in the house in 1961 — and Daddy answered but I didn’t recognise his voice.

You were a great leader as the manager of Meath for 23 years. Where did those skills come from? My father was a born leader, but I became one. The lads I worked with in management made me a leader. I’m a really happy-go-lucky person and I’ve been that way all my life.I met my wife Tina at a party in 1990 and I dropped her home afterwards. Two weeks later we met again and she was supposed to go to Australia. I said to her if she didn’t go, how would she feel about hanging around with me instead? She replied, “Are you asking me to marry you?” I told her to think about it.
