Tasmanians are on the brink of getting their own AFL team, with the prime minister delivering the final piece of the funding jigsaw on Saturday, but many questions remain unanswered, writes Adam Langenberg.

abc.net.au/news/hobart-stadium-funding-afl-team-political-questions/102283036In announcing funding for a Hobart waterfront stadium, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Premier Jeremy Rockliff have answered the question Tasmanians have been asking for decades: when will we finally get an AFL team? But there remains a laundry list of things we simply don't know.Details of the stadium's design are yet to be revealed.

There's currently an estimate of $715 million — $375 million of which will be covered by the state government, $240 million from the federal government, $15 million from the AFL, and the remaining $85 million from borrowings — but major infrastructure projects like these have a knack of blowing their budgets.

The cost of building the Perth Stadium, plus additional transport infrastructure in Western Australia, worked out at $1.8 billion — well above the $1.147 billion cost estimate. And, a redevelopment of the Gabba in Brisbane is now expected to cost $2.7 billion, way more than its initial $1 billion price tag.

Given the history, how likely is it that a stadium we haven't seen detailed designs of, or even know if it will be roofed, will run on budget?
