It’s always amazing to me when I walk into one of these fabulous establishments and it smells like mountains of unwashed socks.
I was recently in a casino, and it felt just like being in Europe.
Anyway, I’m not a gambler, so it’s always amazing to me when I walk into one of these fabulous establishments and it smells like mountains of unwashed socks. What made me laugh about entering this casino was that the olfactory excrescence hits you the second you walk in the door and it takes 10 minutes of walking to the very back before you get to the sign that says “Non-smoking area.”I’m guessing these are the only places left in California where people can still blissfully smoke in public, health hazards be damned, without being shamed or stoned to death by irate friends and colleagues.
In high school, those of us who were cool enough to smoke congregated at the laundromat across the street before school so we could inhale our dose of nicotine before class. I got hypnotized. I went to shock therapy, where they hook up electrodes to your arm and literally shock you every time you light a cigarette. It lasted for a little while, but it wasn’t more powerful than nicotine.
Finally, my mom, who’d been a lifelong smoker, got throat cancer. That did it. I threw away all my cartons and drug delivery implements, including ashtrays, lighters and such. And I never smoked again.After I quit, I discovered – surprise surprise – it’s a truly disgusting habit. Your house stinks. There is no amount of air freshener that can get rid of it. Your breath stinks. Your car stinks. Even your clothing doesn’t survive the cut.
