Warning: Graphic content. A mum has warned parents of the dangers of feeding young kids lime juice in the sun after her son suffered an agonising “margarita burn”. The Australian mum said her son developed a painful “chemical burn” on his chest after he ate the lime outside while playing in the pool.
Nurse’s warning about ‘margarita burn’. “I never knew that this could happen as a parent,” she said. “My husband and I are mortified with the result of the burn. “He is now under the care of our local burns team but it has been a horrible few days.” The little boy had suffered a case of the little-known phytophotodermatitis, otherwise known as margarita burns. It’s a skin condition triggered by a chemical reaction between sunlight and certain plant chemicals, most commonly citrus fruits.
