Bridget McKenzie warns former CEO of legal ramifications if he does not provide evidence regarding block of Qatar Airways flights into Australia
CEO Alan Joyce will need to front up to a Senate inquiry when he returns to Australia from Europe or face “a whole raft of processes”, including the prospect of jail, Bridget McKenzie has warned.
“He is the only one that can go to conversations that he’s informally had with his bromance partner, the prime minister, Anthony Albanese and indeed Minister King,” McKenzie said, later adding there are “a whole raft of processes”. The inquiry, which wrapped up hearings on Thursday afternoon, heard from Virgin CEO Jayne Hrdlicka on Wednesday, who said she had first met with King in January where they discussed the Qatari bid for “five minutes at best” during a one-hour discussion.
Marisa Purvis-Smith, the transport department’s deputy secretary, said her team had asked King’s office about providing the details of her calendar, in relation to questions about a meeting with Joyce on or about 23 January but were told the department should not answer.

‘Fiery exchange’: Qantas’ leaders face Senate bilateral air services inquirySky News Business Reporter Edward Boyd says Qantas’ appearance at the Senate inquiry on Wednesday “didn’t start well”. The bilateral air services inquiry was headlined by the appearance of Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson and Qantas Chairman Richard Goyder. Senate Chair Bridget McKenzie was clearly upset Qantas did not provide a detailed submission when other airlines, including Virgin and Rex, did. Mr Goyder said he had never met with any member of the parliament about the Qatar Airways application for additional flights. Ms McKenzie asked Mr Goyder about the percentage of Qantas’ former CEO Alan Joyce’s bonus that was withheld – Qantas then had to take questions on notice, which “frustrated” Ms McKenzie, according to Mr Boyd. The inquiry included a fiery exchange between Labor Senator Tony Sheldon and Mr Goyder over the illegal sacking of ground staff during the pandemic.
