Byram and Deborah Johnston’s acquisition of O’Connell’s Hotel near Bathurst follows them buying the nearby Tarana Hotel in May. Neither of the pubs have any gaming.

Former corporate high-flyer Byram Johnston has doubled down on his investment in classic country pubs and local fare after buying the nearly 160-year-old O’Connell Hotel near Bathurst.

in 2021, Mr Johnston has turned his attention to business opportunities outside of Sydney – in particular pubs and cattle farms in the Fish River Valley in Central Western NSW. It has no gaming, but instead focuses on serving locally sourced food, wine and beer and catering to the weekend drive market. He hinted at further acquisitons after revealing he had been approached by other publicans to buy their country pubs.“We’ll always look at things. It’s a model that works. Pubs are good investments as you know, and a better alternative to the stock market,” Mr Johnston said.

Irishman and publican Patrick Dwyer obtained the venue’s first alcohol licence in 1869 after he moved his family onto the property.
