The move comes after about 30% of Maricopa County's vote centers saw printers producing ballots too light to be read by on-site tabulators on Election Day.

Maricopa County has asked a former Arizona Supreme Court justice to lead an independent inquiry into its Election Day printer problems, officials announced Friday.

The move to retain her for the investigation comes after about 30% of the county's vote centers had problems with printers producing ballots too light to be read by on-site tabulators on Election Day. In Maricopa County, printers at polling sites produce ballots on demand so that voters can vote at any location in the county.

McGregor didn't waste any time getting started. She spent several hours on Friday at the county's election center, Maricopa County Elections Department spokesperson Megan Gilbertson said. Officials have previously said that printers used at Maricopa County polling sites on Election Day were tested in advance and used the same settings as in previous elections. Still, about 1% of total ballots cast ultimately couldn’t be counted at polling sites by on-site tabulators and were tallied later at the county’s elections center.

Lake witness and IT professional Clay Parikh testified that he believed the widespread printer problem only could have stemmed from an improper ballot-style printer setting that printed 19-inch ballots on 20-inch ballot paper, and he argued that such a mistake could have been purposeful to disenfranchise Lake voters.
