What you need to know about election contests in Texas

The window for filing a legal challenge does not close until 45 days after election records become publicly available. Mealer's petition asks that should she prevail the court either declare her the winner or order a new election.Besides Mealer, at least 11 other Harris County Republicans who lost in November have announced their election contests. Their challenges cited paper ballot shortages they claim resulted in voters being denied a chance to vote, as well as a decision to keep polling locations an extra hour on Election Day because a few opened late that morning.
