Arul Kanda Kandasamy, the former chief executive officer of 1 Malaysia Development Berhad ( 1MDB ), testified in the Kuala Lumpur High Court that he had met fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low , in Abu Dhabi four years before joining the company. This revelation came during the hearing of a US$6.59 billion lawsuit filed against Arul Kanda and former 1MDB chairman Tan Sri Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah.
During the questioning by 1MDB's counsel, Datuk Lim Chee Wee, Arul Kanda confirmed meeting Jho Low in Abu Dhabi while he was in the Middle East. He disclosed that Low had proposed an investment on Al Maryah Island, a prominent financial district in Abu Dhabi. Arul Kanda further stated that he had also met Khadem Al Qubaisi and Mohammed Badawy al Husseiny in Abu Dhabi, individuals who were later implicated in the 1MDB scandal. Explaining his appointment to 1MDB, Arul Kanda said he was approached by Ashvin Jethanand Valiram, a former director of 1MDB, during Valiram's visits to Dubai. They had met at a training course in Malaysia. Ashvin informed him about concerns regarding 1MDB's substantial debt, which threatened to derail stalled projects. Arul Kanda then emailed his resume to Valiram and subsequently underwent interviews with Tan Sri Lodin Wok Kamaruddin, the then-chairman of 1MDB, Tan Sri Ismee Ismail, a former director of 1MDB, and Datuk Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi, the then-CEO of 1MDB. He noted that the interviews primarily focused on his background and experience rather than the specifics of 1MDB's financial situation. Arul Kanda, who received his offer letter on December 18, 2014, claimed to have conducted due diligence on 1MDB before joining the company and acknowledged noticing negative media coverage surrounding it. 1MDB filed a lawsuit against Arul Kanda and Mohd Irwan in May 2021, alleging breach of trust and conspiracy leading to US$1.83 billion in losses linked to the company's investment in 1MDB-Petrosaudi Ltd, which was later converted into the Brazen Sky Limited investment. The lawsuit also claimed that both defendants misappropriated US$3.5 billion in company funds paid to Aabar Investments and US$1.265 billion paid to International Petroleum Investment Company on May 9, 2017. Moreover, 1MDB alleged that Mohd Irwan conspired with Arul Kanda to extend his employment agreement, resulting in a payment of RM2,905,200 to Arul Kanda, all while disregarding the company's best interests, ultimately causing financial losses. Consequently, 1MDB seeks US$6.59 billion in damages from both defendants and an additional RM2.9 million from Mohd Irwan related to the employment agreement extension
