Maidah Koi, a 57-year-old woman battling chronic illnesses, was rescued from her flooded home in Kampung Pengkalan Bukit Garam, Kinabatangan, Malaysia. She relied on neighbors and volunteers for assistance as the Kinabatangan River overflowed its banks. Authorities launched an urgent rescue operation to evacuate residents trapped by the rising waters.

As floodwaters from the Kinabatangan River rose on Monday (Feb 3) morning, 57-year-old Maidah Koi knew she had to leave her home. Battling chronic illnesses, including stomach bleeding, a lung infection, and complications from prolonged antibiotic use, Maidah relied on neighbors and volunteers for assistance. The murky waters threatened to isolate her from the community hall, which had yet to be activated as a temporary relief center.

Maidah and several neighbors waited anxiously, hoping the floodwaters would recede. However, as the river swelled to dangerous levels, authorities launched an urgent rescue operation. Rescuers from the Malaysia Civil Defence Department (APM) worked tirelessly to evacuate residents stranded by the rising waters. Maidah, unable to walk unaided, required assistance from rescuers and volunteers to navigate the treacherous conditions. Despite her own struggles, Maidah expressed concern for her neighbors caught in the devastating floods. She was among 53 residents from 16 households displaced by the floods that hit two villages in Kinabatangan. According to the state disaster management committee, a total of 115 victims from 41 families were rescued from a village in Tongod as of 4 pm. This brings the total number of evacuees to 208 people from 57 families in the two remaining affected districts. This number is considerably lower than the thousands of evacuees across 11 districts last week, following improved weather conditions. Nine districts – Beaufort, Kota Marudu, Telupid, Sandakan, Kota Belud, Lahad Datu, Beluran, Paitan, and Pitas – have declared their relief centers closed
