Police in Kedah, Malaysia, have arrested five men in connection with a fatal house fire in Tongkang Yard. The charred remains of two victims were discovered yesterday morning. Datuk Fisol Salleh, the Kedah Police chief, stated that the suspects, ranging in age from 19 to 563, were apprehended separately throughout the district. The arrests were prompted by intelligence gathered and a police report filed by one of the victims, a man in his 60s, a day before the incident.
This report concerned the theft of a phone, allegedly involving one of the suspects. Fisol explained that the investigation initially focused on the phone theft but has now shifted towards potential murder charges under Section 302 of the Penal Code. He revealed that the initial police report regarding the phone theft on January 20th led to the investigation, which ultimately resulted in the arrest of five individuals for preliminary questioning. Through this process, three primary suspects have been identified. Of the five suspects, three tested positive for drugs and have previous records related to both drug offenses and criminal activity. All five suspects have been remanded for six days to assist with ongoing investigations. Fisol added that authorities are awaiting autopsy results to confirm the victims' identities and the official cause of death. In a separate incident, a 23-year-old unemployed man has been arrested in connection with a blaze that destroyed nine houses in Kupang, near Baling. Fisol stated that the suspect's arrest is believed to have solved all nine cases of arson, which are suspected to be fueled by revenge due to persistent bullying. The suspect has been remanded until Saturday, January 25th, and the case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code (Act 574), which carries a maximum sentence of 14 years imprisonment and a fine.
