Local fishermen in Setiu, Jamaluddin and Khairul Mohamad, faced substantial financial losses of nearly RM1 million when their boats were swept away by a large wave phenomenon. The incident involved multiple boats which took over 10 hours to recover and will require extensive repairs.

SETIU: Dua brothers, Jamaluddin Mohamad and Khairul Hassan Mohamad, suffered significant losses of nearly RM1 million when four Class A fishing boats and one Class B boat belonging to them were damaged after being swept away in a large wave phenomenon near Kampung Telaga Papan today. Jamaluddin, 57, explained that he learned of the incident after his brother, Khairul, 54, informed him, and he rushed to the scene around 7 am.

The boats, which were tied at the Telaga Papan River jetty, were swept away when the river and sea currents broke apart due to the heavy rain. Upon reaching the shore, Jamaluddin discovered that his boats were scattered and some were lost due to collisions with sand bars. The incident involved eight fishing boats and around 15 glass boats owned by local fishermen in the area. The affected boat owners agreed to collect funds and rent seven pieces of equipment, including a crane, to recover all the boats, which took over 10 hours. Jamaluddin also mentioned significant losses from the damage to three boats he had owned for over a decade. Meanwhile, Khairul estimated that it might take nearly a year to repair the boats due to the extent of the damage, including engine repairs which come with high costs
