Former MetroHealth President and CEO Dr. Akram Boutros has filed a lawsuit against the hospital over his dismissal.CLEVELAND, Ohio — Fired MetroHealth System CEO Dr. Akram Boutros has filed a lawsuit agains the MetroHealth Board of Trustees for violations of the Ohio Open Meetings Act, his attorney Jason Bristol said in a statement late Monday.

Last week, the MetroHealth Board of Trustees fired Boutros, who had led the hospital system for nearly 10 years, saying he had given himself $1.98 million in unauthorized bonuses. Boutros said the bonuses were authorized by the board.Court of Common Pleas, Bristol said. He said it details multiple violations of Ohio’s Open Meetings Act and the MetroHealth System Board of Trustees bylaws by the MetroHealth Board and its chair, Vanessa L. Whiting.

“The suit is the result of an investigation that clearly demonstrates the wanton disregard for Ohio’s Open Meetings Act and the board bylaws by its board and Chair Vanessa Whiting in both the hiring process for the health system’s new CEO and the so-called investigation of Dr. Boutros’ compensation,” the statement said.Metrohealth leadership was checking to see if it had a copy of the lawsuit to review before commenting, a spokesperson said.
