As temperatures start to dip and get cooler this winter, the risk for home fires can increase
—drastically.CBS 21 spoke with Chief Brian Enterline at Harrisburg Fire Department who said they only had a couple space heater fires last year and hopes to continue that into this year as well.
Chief Enterline is informing residents of some of the best practices for fire safety when using space heaters: Don't leave those things on overnight while you're sleeping. Use those extra covers, extra blankets to stay warm but turn that thing off. You don't want that thing to malfunction in the middle the night. They're not designed to stay on all that time.
Enterline also said that it is extremely important to make sure your space heater is plugged directly into the wall, and that the device is always three feet away from any other objects, such as a bed or wall.
