Dallas County is suing Texas over its failure to accept inmates for mental treatment in a timely manner, citing wait times of more than 800 days for some....

Dallas County filed a lawsuit over the wait times some inmates face trying to get a state psychiatric bed to get help before their case moves forward.

The lawsuit filed Thursday in Travis County follows months of requests by Dallas officials that the state fix problems with taking custody of these inmates, who are determined by the courts to need treatment before court proceedings can move forward. The Office of the Attorney General did not respond to requests for comment and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission declined to comment.

Dallas has more prisoners waiting for care than any other Texas county. As of the end of February, the average wait time for Dallas inmates slated for a maximum-security bed at a state facility where they can get medical treatment is 869 days, the lawsuit says.
