Red Bull boss Christian Horner has moved to squash rumours the team has given Sergio Perez an ultimatum to improve by season’s end or else be sacked.
Perez is second in the drivers’ championship but only 30 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton, with five races remaining in the Formula One season.
But ahead of this weekend’s United States Grand Prix, Horner said talk of Red Bull giving Perez an ultimatum was untrue.“We believe that he can achieve that second place in the championship but he is up against tough competitors with a lot of racing still to go.“We selected Checo in the first place because of his experience and his ability to be able to deal with pressure.
“It’s a tough season and tough being Max’s teammate – we mustn’t forget the challenge that is mentally. “The mood in the team is very, very good and everyone knows exactly what their role is.” Referring to the death last year of Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz, who had appointed Marko, 80, to his role with the team, the 26-year-old Dutchman added: “Of course, it was sad times last year when Dietrich passed away.
He only drove in two races before his injury and will look to finish the season on a high after being locked in to drive for AlphaTauri next year.
