Reaching out to multicultural communities will be crucial to helping the indigenous Voice pass the referendum.

is not being raised as an issue in one of Australia’s most ethnically diverse seats, with voters instead focused on hip pocket pain, according to independent federal MP Dai Le.

Ms Le’s Cabramatta-based seat of Fowler had the third-highest rate of informal voting at 10.5 per cent. The other seats were Blaxland, McMahon, Werriwa, Watson, Parramatta, Chifley and Greenway, along with five other seats in Sydney and Melbourne with big multicultural populations.Ms Le remains neutral about the Voice at this stage, citing a lack of details. But she believes in choice and says people should be allowed to make up their own minds on the referendum.

“The Voice will need to have a very effective communication with CALD people to tell communities such as ours how this would impact their current situation,” she said.Sydney Labor backbencher Sally Sitou, who holds the seat of Reid, said it was important to recognise that CALD communities were not a homogenous group, and there were varying levels of understanding of and engagement with the Voice.

Michelle Cao, 40, who is ethnically Chinese and lives in Grayndler, said she had not heard of the Voice to Parliament, but was supportive of having more Indigenous participation in government.Advertisement“If the government is majority-led by white males, I guess, for minorities there is always a lack of voice,” she added.

He said more established migrants who had been here for decades might have an attitude of “we did it hard” and be less willing to support the Voice, although he personally found this a silly argument.
