Eastern Sabah Security Command commander Datuk Hazani Ghazali, in a Bernama report today, said checks showed that the armed smugglers had fled to the Philippines waters after the incident.He said in the incident, the boat, with five personnel on board, were patrolling the area off Semporna when they were fired upon by a group of smugglers in a speed boat.
“In the incident, about 50 shots were fired in the exchange between Customs officers and the group of smugglers.Hazani said the smugglers had fled towards Philippines waters. Earlier, Semporna police chief Superintendent Sabarudin Rahmat said that the shooting happened at 5.30pm in the waters near Pulau Mataking.Police did not discount the possibility that the case was related to cigarette smuggling activity.
